Top Social Media Platform Demographics

In my last (and first, ever) blog, I highlighted five tips to help you enhance, and revamp your digital marketing strategy. One of those tips was “choose social wisely”. Later on, I realized that’s easier said than done, ESPECIALLY if you own and/or manage a business. Social platforms don’t make it easy for you to find the demographics of the members that use them the most. In order to find that useful info there’s some research involved, and even then the information you find can be conflicting or at the very least confusing!

SO, I took it upon myself to do the dirty work aka research in hopes of helping you identify which social media platform(s) would best serve your customers and your hard-earned marketing dollars.

First, some up-to-date social media stats via The Global Web Index, because those are always helpful and interesting {at least to me anyway :) }.

  • 92% of online adults have an account on at least one social media site, with 78% actively using one. NINETY TWO PERCENT OF ADULTS, GLOBALLY!!

  • The average internet user spends 1 hr 49 mins per day on social networks, up from 1 hr 36 mins in 2012. By demographics, it’s younger and lower income groups who devote the most time to networking.

  • Globally, Facebook is the top network for membership (81%) and active usage (47%). However, YouTube earns top position for visitation (85%).

  • Year-by-year, Instagram has kept its title of the fastest growing network overall. Facebook and YouTube have also seen notable rises in active usage.

  • Instagram has now edged ahead of Twitter for visitation rates in 8 of the 33 countries surveyed. It has also taken the lead among the 16-24 age group.

  • Tumblr, Instagram and Vine have the youngest audiences, with 37-39% of their respective active users coming from the 16-24 group. Facebook and LinkedIn have the oldest audiences.

The top 8 social platforms according to membership, visitation, and active usage are as follows:

1. Facebook 2. YouTube 3. Google+

4. Twitter

5. Instagram

6. LinkedIn

7. Snapchat

8. Pinterest
